TxD Managed DNS

The easiest way to manage your DNS settings is to let TextDrive do it for you. Simply follow the "Virtualmin Virtual Servers" link in Webmin, click on the virtual server you want to manage, set "Enable PowerDNS domain?" to (*) Yes and click the "Save Virtual Server" button.

In order for this to work, you must set your DNS servers at your domain name registrar for the domain hosted with TxD to:

dns1.textdrive.com
dns2.textdrive.com
dns3.textdrive.com
dns4.textdrive.com

KB 136

Why manage DNS yourself?

Some people like more control over their DNS settings. If you want to make a change to the default setup (for example, you want your email to be sent to your Joyent Connector or Google Apps), you need to submit a support ticket and wait for TxD staff to make the changes for you.

If you manage your own DNS settings with a service like the popular DNS Made Easy or a hosting company with a DNS control panel, you have full control over your settings and can make changes any time you like.

DNS Settings for TextDrive Shared Servers

At the moment, a typical TxD shared server zone looks like this:

*.yourdomain.com A 207.7.108.242
lists.yourdomain.com A 207.7.108.242
localhost.yourdomain.com A 127.0.0.1
mail.yourdomain.com A 207.7.108.242
mysql.yourdomain.com A 207.7.108.242
svn.yourdomain.com A 207.7.108.242
yourdomain.com A 207.7.108.242
www.yourdomain.com A 207.7.108.242
yourdomain.com MX mail.yourdomain.com
yourdomain.com NS dns1.textdrive.com
yourdomain.com NS dns2.textdrive.com
yourdomain.com NS dns3.textdrive.com
yourdomain.com NS dns4.textdrive.com
yourdomain.com SOA "dns1.textdrive.com dns1.textdrive.com dns.textdrive.com 2005012001 3600 3600 604800 7200"
yourdomain.com TXT "v=spf1 a mx a:mail.textdrive.com ?all"

Replace 207.7.108.242 with the IP of your shared server.

Not all the A records are actually used or needed. TxD staff felt they would include the additional A records to facilitate switching entire services to different hosts.

TxD sets TTL to 2400 for everything.

Planned Improvements

TxD plans to offer control of DNS setting through TextPanel. (TextPanel was officially killed on February 20, 2007. http://forum.textdrive.com/viewtopic.php?id=14413)
